Resolutions vs Intentions

Resolutions+vs+Intentions

Hana Leftridge

Welcome back Bobcats! Now that the holiday season is behind us, it is time to begin the New Year. January is a month of promises and goal setting: hit the gym more, eat less junk food, drink

more water, and the list continues on and on. Sadly, our “new year, new me” attitude seems to wane after the first couple of weeks. This sad fact is what created New Year’s intentions.

Resolutions tend to be binding and the first step to failure in the New Year, so this year instead of choosing New Year’s resolutions decide on New Year’s intentions. As the expression goes, “no one is perfect” and as cliché as it sounds it is true. Intentions will allow for those occasional off days without the feeling of failure that follows.

Intentions don’t have to be big picture ideas. Achieving what you set out to do will be easier if you take it in small increments. Set intentions for the month, week, and day.

Monthly intentions would be things that don’t happen daily or even weekly. Instead of swearing to keep your room clean all year just make an effort to do a deep clean once a month. If you are setting saving goals make them monthly, try to save 5-10 dollars a month.

Weekly intentions will most likely be your healthy eating goal time frame. Instead of buying take out three times a week try to limit it to once a week. Exercising will also fall into this category. I would recommend being realistic when it comes to this goal, instead of shooting for daily gym time just try to make 2-3 times a week.

Daily intentions will be things like your water goals. Try to drink your desired amount of water each day. This will also be where your sleep goals fall. Don’t make your goal so big that it becomes difficult to achieve, set an attainable goal and increase by little increments.

With all the promise the New Year brings I wish you luck in 2018.
