Don’t Fear the New School Year

Gracie Brett

The end of summer is dreaded by all students. There’s a list of reasons why we love summer: sleeping in, warm weather, and no homework. Believe it or not there are perks that accompany coming back to school!

  1. Getting back to a fixed schedule

In the summer, sometimes there’s no motivation to go to bed or wake up at a reasonable hour. After about a month, my sleeping patterns are so odd that it makes it impossible for me to get a good eight hours of rest. When the school year rolls around, I know exactly what time I need to go to bed and wake up. This makes me way less sluggish and moody!

  1. Sports

Fall sports are huge at Bel Air High School. Whether you play golf, football, volleyball, field hockey or cross country- you love your sport. Even if you play your favorite sport outside of school, it’s not the same as being with your friends and teammates from school. The summer heat can be unbearable, so playing in the fall will make you sweat less and make it much more enjoyable.

  1. Seeing friends

Everyone is on different schedules in the summertime. With vacations, camps, and jobs; it gets complicated. Sometimes the only way to see your friends is in school, because everyone gets busy at some point.

  1. New outfits

Back to school shopping is a must. If you’re like me, then this is the highlight of the summer. When you look good, you feel good, and feeling good can translate to doing well in school! After a while, shorts and t-shirts can get boring. It’s nice to change it up and get to buy pants and sweaters for when the weather starts to get chilly. The best part of back to school shopping is that your parents are more willing to pay for your new threads. Who wouldn’t like that?

  1. Homecoming

Right after school begins, homecoming is right around the corner. With the homecoming parade, game, court, spirit days, and dance; it offers something for everybody! Personally, I like the dance the best because… Well a new dress and shoes, duh.

  1.  Tolerable weather

During the harsh winter months, we crave summer weather. We tend to forget the hot, humid weather is unbearable, so we just stay inside with the air conditioning turned up.  In the fall, it’s a perfect mix of summer and winter. Not too hot, and not too cold. It’s perfect for watching a high school football game… or a golf match.

  1. A fresh start

It’s difficult mid-school year to decide you want to turn your habits around. A new school year gives you new teachers, so a new reputation. If last year you didn’t do any of your homework, don’t sweat it, because this year you can change that. Buy some new school supplies, get organized, and make goals. This way you can be totally prepared to get the straight A’s you’ve been dreaming of.

Of course everyone will be a disappointed to wake up early, do homework, and get back to the daily grind. Hopefully these seven reasons will give you a little more pep in your step when you walk through Bel Air High School’s doors into a new school year.
