Sixth Annual Celebration of Cultures to be Held at Armory

On Saturday, May 2, 2015, the sixth annual Celebration of Cultures event will occur at the Bel Air Armory from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to celebrate the diversity of the Harford community.

This event is sponsored by the Harford Cultural Arts Board, the Great Bel Air Foundation, the Harford County Human Relations Commission, and LASOS Inc. LASOS (Linking All So Others Succeed) is a non-profit organization that provides all the necessities that non-English speaking members of the community need such as: classes in civics, financial literacy, citizenship, technology, and many more.

The event is free with performers from different countries and cultural backgrounds coming to the event to show their talents. Scottish dance teams, Amartia Greek belly dancing, Chung’s martial arts demonstrations, Kilcoyn dancers, and other performances will be presented at the event.

“It’s just a day filled with diversity and it’s nice to have a day to celebrate others,” Melynda Velez, the founder of LASOS, stated.

There will be a multitude of activities present at the event for the attendees. For children, there will be a children’s garden with storytelling from stories of different cultures, face painting, interactive performances, and craft making.

“I’m really excited to see what information and countries will be at the event,” Alexi Misciagna, a student from Bel Air High School, remarked.

Different types of crafts will be presented such as: Bottle melting, jewelry making, dress making, pottery, constructing magic wands, wood working, and accessory making.

“As an artist, I am interested in seeing what kinds of fine art, illustration, and ceramics that may be available at the event,” said Hendrika Misciagna, an Artist studying at Harford Community College

Bake sales range from $0.50 to $2.00, with crêpes at $5.00. Food will be provided by Sunny Day Café and other local restaurants.

“I’m really excited to taste all the good food and watch all the amazing performances there at the event,” Carl Gonzales, a Bel Air Middle School student, stated.

The LASOS committee is the only group currently doing this type of event in the Bel Air area. They are expecting to have a crowd of 700 to 800 people attend the event this year
