Bel Air Basketball Takes On North Harford

On Friday, Feb. 10, the Bel Air Men’s Basketball Team held on until the very end to defeat North Harford on their senior night, 52-49.

The contest was very close throughout the first two quarters; the largest lead held by either team was six. The offensive woes continued for the Bobcats as they struggled to hit shots from outside the paint. However, they were riding a wave of momentum after taking down league leader, Havre De Grace earlier in the week away from home. Senior Mike Yetter stepped up to help guide the Cats to a one-point advantage at halftime.

The Bobcats, who quickly took a 14-point lead, forcing the Hawks to waste two timeouts, dominated the third quarter. Senior Jon Scott led the team in scoring again, dropping 13 points and dishing out four assists. Despite the large lead in the third quarter, the Hawks took advantage of some careless mistakes made by the Bobcats and began to chip away at the lead, cutting it to three with a few minutes left in the game. Senior Daniel Webber stepped up to make some clutch free throws to save his senior night and record the victory.

“We obviously didn’t play our best defense at times and had some unforced turnovers, however we are improving in tight situations and that’s going to be crucial down the road.” Coach Alex Darko states. “I want to thank students and everyone else that come out to support us.”

With promotion out of the picture, the Bobcats must now focus seeding for the 4A State Playoffs. As it stands, they would host Pikesville in the first round at home. However, that can change with a few more games yet to be played.

“We’ve had two great wins this past week over two very tough teams,” Explains Senior Jamario Sampson. “We need to ride this wave of momentum into the last few games of the season and into playoffs.”

The last home game will be on Feb. 15, against Rising Sun – a team the Bobcats took down earlier in the year. Varsity will tip-off at 6:45 p.m. and JV at 5:15 p.m. Come out and support your basketball team as the look to close the year out on a positive note.
