On Oct. 27, 2016, the creators of the app, “Vine”, published an article on Medium.com stating the discontinuation of the application that brought many teenagers, and kids alike, endless laughs and entertainment through 6-second videos. While the official reasoning for this has not been disclosed just yet, the public has done their research and have a couple good ideas as to why Vine is “shutting down”.

First off, Twitter has owned Vine ever since it’s official release. Twitter has also been struggling to remain profitable and compete with other apps in the app store, especially Instagram. The company recently stated, to the public’s surprise, that they are going to be laying off over 300 employees. Twitter simply cannot afford to keep Vine around.

Another theory is that Vine just couldn’t keep up with the competition. Since Instagram added a video feature for its consumers to use, Vine hasn’t been able to recover, and the number of people using the once chart-topping app has been dwindling ever since.

But do not fear! The hilarious videos that brought many their “6-seconds of fame”, and others never-ending laughs, have not just suddenly been deleted from the internet. Vine will not be deleting the app just yet, and it will remain available in the app store for the next couple months. In the article on Medium, Vine creators stated, “We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website.” At least they’re sympathetic, right??

While this is very sad news to all, I think it’s safe to say that everyone got a few good laughs from the app and it served its full purpose. If you want to save some of your favorites from Vine onto your camera roll before it shuts down, there are ways to download the videos using apps like SaveDrive. So, when the sad day comes where the app IS officially deleted, we will still be able to watch our beloved “Viners” from our camera roll whenever we need a good laugh.
