Bel Air Varsity Ice Hockey Loses To Easton

On Friday Jan. 20, the Boys’ Varsity Ice Hockey Team hosted the Easton Warriors in what would turn out to be an intense battle on the ice.

In the first period, Bel Air struck first as Junior Evan Bergquist ripped a shot off a one-timer to put the Cats up 1-0. It did not take Easton long to respond as just a couple of minutes later, they scored from a slap shot that went bar down to tie the game up at one.

In the second period, Evan Bergquist added his second goal of the night from a snap shot at the point to put the Bobcats back up by one. Yet again, Easton bounced right back and scored from another shot that went bar down to tie the game up at two.

“Easton is a tough team,” Bergquist says. “Every time we got the lead, they just came right back.”

The Warriors kept fighting and eventually took their first lead of the night, scoring a goal from an unlucky bounce to put them up 3-2. In the third period, Bel Air continued to have bad luck as Easton scored yet again on an unlucky bounce to put them up 4-2.

Midway through the third period, Bergquist once again slipped past both of the defensemen and scored to complete the hat trick, cutting the deficit down to one. The Evan Bergquist show was not quite over as he added one more goal to his fantastic night from a snap shot at the blue line to tie the game up at four.

Easton quickly responded with another goal from a wrist shot that went top right to put them back up 5-4. With about three minutes remaining, senior Jack Fitzgerald was tripped on a breakaway, which gave him a penalty shot! On the penalty shot, Jack deked left, deked right, and slipped the puck in the bottom right corner to tie the game back up at five. As hard as the Bobcats fought, Easton spoiled their parade as they scored off a wrist shot with just 50 seconds left to take the win over the Bobcats, 6-5.

“This is a tough loss for us,” states Bergquist. “Not only because they won in the last minute, but because they might’ve just eliminated us from the playoffs.”

The Bobcats’ next game is on Monday, Jan. 30, and they will be traveling to Bowie Ice Rink to face the Severna Park Falcons.
