BAHS Celebrates a Successful Fall Sports Season

Alex Munley

With fall sports coming to a close, we look back on a memorable season for the Bobcats, one of the most accomplished and exciting in recent memory. Bel Air dominated the County and most of the region. All 8 teams not only made play offs, but did exceptionally well, giving Bel Air 3 Regional Championship’s, 4 UCBAC championships, and one State title.

Football finished the regular season with a 9-1 record, tied with the best record in UCBAC’s and making the playoffs for first time in 10 years. Senior Brad Casale came 10 yards short of the Maryland single game rushing record with 436 rushing yards against C. Milton Wright, and Devin Bowers replaced Juwan Singletary as the leading rusher all time at Bel Air High school. Bel Air Football lost in the Regional Championship 28-14 to the defending 3A state champions, Franklin.

Coach Huryk said, “Everybody on this team had a role to play in one way or another. Everybody had a job to do and they did it, no questions asked. We play Bel Air ball and that’s running it straight at you, most teams have never played a team like us.”

Boys’ Volleyball made it to the Harford County Championship beating previously unbeaten North Harford, only to fall to a very accomplished Harford Tech team in 4 sets.  Girls’ Volleyball finished the season with only 2 losses going 15-2 and beating C. Milton Wright all 3 times. They eventually lost in the regional championship.

Field Hockey finished the season with a 12-5 record while beating last year’s state champion C. Milton Wright. Field Hockey was tied with the best record in the UCBAC’s and won Bel Air’s first Regional Championship for Field Hockey in 20 years, only to lose in State Semi’s, the 2nd straight fall sport team to make it to State Semi’s.

Girls’ Soccer won UCBAC’s for the second straight year and won a Regional Championship for the second straight year. For some time, the Girls were ranked number 3 in the state by the Baltimore Sun, with notable wins against South River and C. Milton. Boys’ Soccer finished with a record of 11-2-1 while winning UCBAC’s and achieving the first seed in the region for state playoffs, but would eventually fall to C. Milton in overtime in the Sectional final. The Boys also breached the top 10 in the State, becoming number 10 for a short time according to the Baltimore Sun.

Cross Country finished the season with many notable wins against very good teams including Edgewood and Fallston. The Boys’ team placed 3rd in Regionals and placed 7th in States. The Girls’ team placed 5th in Regionals, with Emily League advancing and placing 59th in the state.

The Golf team had yet another amazing season, not only wining UCBAC’s for the 3rd straight year and going undefeated as well. Bel Air Golf sent two golfers to states: Tyler Newton and Cody Smith.

Last but not least, the 2014 3A State Champion Cheerleading team really made Bel Air proud this year. The Girls’ won the first annual Bobcat invitational, but they did not stop there. They went on to win the County championship, sending them to the Regional championship. Placing second in Regional’s advanced the Bobcats to States, allowing them to win their first State title.

“We had so much talent this year,” Coach Joffee commented. “Although we were plagued with injuries we had so much talent that we didn’t have to worry. We knew last year that this year’s team could really do it so we pushed them throughout the season and look where we ended up!
