Five Class Periods A Day

Connor Ostadali

School. We all go to it. Five days a week from the end of August until the beginning of June. For some of us, it can be a fun time to meet up with friends and learn something new… For the rest of us, a stressful blur of taking challenging classes all throughout the year and spending whatever time you have left doing homework and studying for quizzes and tests. But what would happen if instead of taking four classes a day, we all took five?

You might be asking yourself, why five classes a day? What’s the method to my madness? My idea for having five classes a day was inspired by Mr. Andrews during a contemporary issues class discussion. He was explaining how if we did have five classes a day, we would only have school four days a week and have three day weekends all the time.

“I think this is a great idea,” states junior Blake Lioi, “because if we only go to school four days a week,  it would be worth having the five classes a day.”

If you’re wondering how this would all work, the extra class tagged onto the end of the day, Mondays through Thursdays, would add up to the four classes no longer needed to be taken on Friday. And to make it so that we don’t have to go to school until the end of July, school in-session requirement would  need to be changed from 180 days to a certain amount of hours.

“I agree on only having school four days a week.” Says Alex Navarro, junior at Bel Air. “I wouldn’t mind staying for an extra class everyday if it meant having a much longer weekend.”

The school board,  right now, requires 180 days of full school instruction, or as long as lunch is served. So, all we need to do is figure out how many hours would equate to a full school year, and present and implement an alternative method of counting off those days and enjoying the weekend,

In conclusion, having four days of school a week would be pretty awesome in my eyes, and hopefully for lots of other people as well. All we need to do is have some energy left at the end of the day for one more class!! And to enjoy the rest of the year having three day weekends on a regular basis.
