On Nov. 14, 2015, The Modern Duelist Fencing Academy will hold a tournament for ages 13 and older to determine the athletic strengths of their fencers.

Fencing has been an Olympic sport since 1896. The sport is based on European sword dueling, and has three different divisions: foil, saber, and epee. It improves posture, balance, coordination, reflexes, concentration, self-control, self-confidence, sportsmanship, safety habits, and active living habits within its participants.

The Modern Duelist Fencing Academy started in Jun. 2013 and has two coaches, Jeff Safko and Rob Conway. Classes at the club cost from $80 a month to $250 a month.

Jeff Safko, head coach of the Modern Duelist Fencing Academy, said, “Physical activity and sports are important to everyone, a lot of people should try fencing.”

On Sept. 26, the Maryland Fencing Club held a Veterans Epee Tournament. The winner of the tournament was Keith Quarles.

Greg Paye, head coach at the Maryland Fencing Club stated, “The thing I enjoy most is seeing how fencing can change people’s lives. It can bring participants adventures and opportunities for social activity, and challenge them to grow personally. As the coach, I get be there for their journey and help them along.”

The Maryland fencing club started in Aug. 2008 and has four coaches Greg Paye, Jim Murray, Aaron Kandlik, and Deborah Apple. Classes at the Maryland fencing Club cost from $60 a month to $250 a month.

Marty Misciagna, a fencer from the Modern Duelist Fencing Academy, stated,” I think it’s a combination of great exercise, great camaraderie, and competition.”

Both the Maryland Fencing Club and Modern Duelist Fencing Academy welcome and encourage new members of any age and those who are curious about the sport to come by and participate or watch a class.
