Boys’ Volleyball Places 2nd In Harford County Tournament

On, Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Joppatowne High School, Boys’ Volleyball ended their season by placing 2nd in the Harford County tournament, claiming victory over the previously undefeated team, the North Harford Hawks.

In their first match, Bel Air was up as much as 9-2, 12-3, 14-4, 18-6, 20-9 and ultimately won 25-14 against North Harford, who had beat Bel Air twice during the regular season (3-0, 3-1). The second set was much closer, until Bel Air took a 15-9 lead, then 17-11, and eventually won 25-16. In the third set it was the Hawks turn to jump ahead 6-1, 10-5, 12-8 until Bel Air tied at 12. The Hawks then broke out on top again at 21-17, but Bel Air answered with 6 consecutive points to take the lead at 23-21. North Harford was able to tie at 23. Bel Air then won the next two points to win the last set (25-23) and advance to the finals to face the Harford Tech Cobras. Senior outside hitter and Co-captain Gavin Hanley contributed the most points in the match for Bel Air with 13, while senior Mitchell Wooten had 5 blocks and 3 kills.

Bel Air faced another team that had won twice during the regular season. The first set was closely contested with the Cobras winning 25-22. Bel Air was able to win the second set 25-21 to tie the game 1-1. In the third set, Harford Tech took a significant lead at 23-16 and won 25-17. In the last set, the Cobras were able to get 25-14 and win the tournament. In this match, it was Senior outside hitter and Captain Josh Bavis that led Bel Air with 15 kills and 3 blocks. Gavin Hanley contributed 11 kills and Joey Caudill 27 assists. Solid performances were demonstrated by Senior middle hitter Jake Davenport and Juniors libero Luke Beyers and Evan Kern.

Senior Captain Josh Bavis stated, “All I can say is I am so proud of my boys. They played with so much heart. We swept the only undefeated team and had the chance to play in the championship. I couldn’t have asked for more from any one of them. Harford tech is a great team and they earned the win.”

Throughout the tournament, Josh Bavis had 37 kills, Gavin Hanley 30 kills, Joey Caudill 93 assists, Jack Anglada 21 kills and 5 blocks, and Mitchell Wooten 12 kills and 7 1/2 blocks.

Senior Captain Gavin Hanley stated, “I am so proud of our team, we played with everything we had, I will never forget this experience, and I can’t thank everyone enough. Great way to end the season.”
