On Saturday, Sep. 13, the Bel Air High School Boys’ Soccer Team traveled to Potomac, MD and toppled Montgomery County powerhouse Winston Churchill in a tight 1-0 match.

The game, which had been circled on the Bobcats calendar for months, was originally supposed to take place on Thursday, Sep. 11, but was cancelled and rescheduled for Saturday due to heavy thunderstorms in the Potomac area.

Senior Captain Logan Szekalski commented before the game. “This is a big game for us. We’re gonna need to beat teams like this when it really matters.”

Bel Air came out strong in the first half, seeking revenge for a 4-0 defeat last year. Churchill did not falter however, and came back even stronger, as was expected from the No. 3 ranked team at the end of last year. The first chance for the Bobcats came in the beginning of the first half from a corner by Logan Szekalski.  JD Bruck struck the ball, but it snuck over the crossbar leaving the game deadlocked. With 1:40 remaining in the half, Senior Alex Munley crossed the ball into the box onto the foot of fellow Senior Zach Memmo who one-timed the ball into the back of the net, giving Bel Air the 1-0 lead going into the half.

The game was more back and forth in the second half with Churchill earning themselves a couple chances early in the first half. Bel Air regained their footing after the Bulldogs’ onslaught and managed to take back the game for the rest of the half.

“This was a very very very nice win,” said Coach Rose after the game. “It solidifies our belief that we have the potential to win a state championship”

The Bobcats continue their unbeaten streak, moving to 3-0 (1-0). Bel Air’s next game will take place at BA against Mt. Carmel, Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
