The Gay Straight Alliance: Taking One Step at a Time

Johanna Hoch

High school is the period of our lives that we tend to find out who we truly are, who we think we are, or who we want to be. Our sexual orientation and gender identity is such a difficult concept to grasp in high school. Feeling confused or alone on the matter is something that can prevent us from truly excelling or appreciating ourselves. At Bel Air High School, there is a safe place to figure it all out.

If you want a safe and accepting environment, no matter what your sexual orientation and gender identity is, then the Gay Straight Alliance is there for you. Every Tuesday after school, the group meets in Mrs. Ballard’s room (C303). Be prepared to be surrounded by open minded, accepting, and loving people. It is a place that everyone can speak their mind and get support from people that understand and want to be involved in changing your life for the better.

“We try to form a Gay-Straight Alliance,” says the president/student adviser of GSA, Michael Lupano.  “This gives everyone the chance to advocate the principle of being yourself, and spreading positivity. Our GSA offers anyone, a safe and enriching environment where people can get to know themselves for who they truly are. It is a safe haven to evaluate your sexuality and gender. If you are struggling with discovering your identity, our GSA family welcomes you with open arms, and supports you with an open mind.”

The main goal of the GSA is to educate, advocate, and support. The goal is to educate anyone who is willing to learn about the LGBTQ+ Community, regardless of who they are. Even if someone is straight or cisgender, the opportunity to hear another perspective is given, so everyone can learn about each other to develop caring feelings. Meetings are consistently loaded with hysterical laughter and hugs. Regardless if the story being shared is heartbreaking or hilarious, everyone will be there for you to react and support your words in a comforting way.

“Many kids and teenagers have nowhere to go and nowhere to turn to. It doesn’t help that our school basically has no form of education on these important matters. The GSA is here to shed light on educational topics and informational resources,” Michael passionately added. “We are a progressive shelter to those who don’t get the support they deserve. When you take a step in the GSA, you take a step out of the closet. For so many people, that is a breath of fresh air that keeps them from suffocating from all the hate they receive.”

Everybody is welcome to join. If you have any questions feel free to come and contact Mrs. Ballard, the teacher adviser of GSA, or talk to the president Michael Lupano. The GSA is saving lives and promoting equality. Feel free to join us in making history.
