On Feb. 3, 2015 several biomedical students and alumni traveled to Washington, D.C to present for Project Lead the way at a Congressional Reception.  The presentation was aimed at sharing amazing things that the students of Bel Air High School have done throughout the course of the Biomedical Sciences program.

The students that presented at a congressional reception at the Russell Senate Office Building were Seniors Hunter Gerard, Morgan Domanico, Ciera Munday, and Katy Higinbothom and they presented their emergency room innovation project, which consisted of an app that they had created as well as an emergency room floor design created on the program Sketch Up.

The group of students based their project off of various emergency room designs they had researched and what they all agreed would make an emergency room more effective and efficient. They used the program Sketch Up to make a virtual design of the E.R. to show the actual floor design by adding rooms and furniture to the appropriate places. The app was created as an innovation to help those who got injured on the beach since they decided to locate the emergency room in Seal Beach, California.

“It was such an amazing opportunity to go to Washington D.C. and speak about our project. It was definitely an experience I will never forget because I got to meet some very important people and talk to them about all the hard work we have done over the years in the program,” described Hunter Gerard.

Alumni Kyra McPherson was also in attendance and she presented her senior project she had completed two years ago. Her innovation was based on her experience interning at Johns Hopkins Pediatric Oncology.  The results of her project are now being used by Johns Hopkins because her bloodwork innovation saves the hospital time and money. McPherson also discussed the impact of the Biomedical Sciences program on her college education at Stevenson University and discussed how the program prepared her for upper level science courses in college. The Biomedical Innovations teachers Mr. Michael Burke and Mr. Josh Clemmer accompanied the students as well as Mr. Komondor, Principal and Mrs. Harris, Assistant Principal.

“From classroom projects and labs to STEM elementary camps and outreach everyone in the program displays a passion for learning and STEM that is inspiring,” Assistant Principal Mrs. Harris stated about what she enjoys about the program.

While at the reception, the students had the opportunity to speak to Senator Tammy Baldwin from (WI) and Senator Tim Kaine (VA) and were able to talk to them about their projects and talk about different experiences that they have had the past four years in the Biomed program.
