Winter Solstice Slam Is A Hit

On Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014, the Winter Solstice Poetry Slam and Open Mic was held in the Black Box Theater.

The night began with the Open Mic section. There were many musical acts, including a Capella covers by both Megan Burton and Lauren Roller. Chris Lovrovich and The Average, a band comprised of Hector Belarmino and Andrew Kowalewski, performed original songs. Alumni Jordan Wilner sang a song while accompanying herself on the banjo, and Ben Rynes and James DiMeo performed a saxophone and piano duet. DiMeo also performed with Canvas, the biggest band of the night. The only non-musical act was Nathan Alexander, who recited some of his poetry. Throughout the night, the audience was also entertained by the many puns created by host Olivia Streett.

After the Open Mic, the slam portion begun. Alumni Hope Daugherty stepped in as the “sacrificial goat” to begin the slam. The slammers included Amanda Walstrum, Kaylee Stampone, Quinn Baumeister, August Napolitano, and Carrie George. After two rounds of poetry, the winners were announced. Quinn Baumeister took third place, August Napolitano came in second, and Carrie George was awarded first.

“I’m very happy,” said George. “I really like performing my slams.”

The slam theme of Winter Solstice was conceived by Streett. It was complete with flower crowns, many Krampus references, and even woodland themed ornaments as prizes for the slam winners.

“I wanted to change things up a bit,” said Streett. “Something more traditional than Christmas.”

The next poetry slam is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2014.
