The 2026 Met Gala brought bold fashion to the spotlight, but many of the evening’s looks felt underwhelming. A number of celebrity outfits disappointed viewers because they seemed plain, boring, or better suited for another red-carpet event.
This year’s theme was “Costume Art.” Tyla stood out on the red carpet in a stunning look covered in body glitter, while the Carter family Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Blue Ivy Carter also impressed and drew strong reactions from the crowd.
Doechii also caught attention by walking the carpet barefoot in a purple dress, with henna decorating her feet. Many people questioned the choice to go without shoes, but the dress made the look complete and well fit.
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky made an appearance and completely owned the red carpet. Teyana Taylor also stood out in an all silver look that sparked more mixed reactions.
Some of the least successful appearances, in my view, were Olivia Wilde and Sam Smith. Sam Smith’s look was not especially surprising given his usual bold style, and Karlie Kloss’s outfit felt too basic compared with what many hoped to see.
Katy Perry’s look was seen by some as overdone, while Tate McRae’s outfit came across as classy but safe. Since the Met Gala is known for bold and creative fashion, some viewers expected more risk-taking from all parties.
