As we enter the month of May, spring sports here at Bel Air are approaching their final stretch. We have seen exciting wins, career milestones, college commitments, and much more from the students. After having the chance to speak to a couple of athletes and coaches, let’s slide into the details.
Softball
The Varsity Softball coach, Bel Air Middle School teacher Mrs. Cosgrove, expressed her excitement about their season. “The season is pretty good; our record is good. Alaina Torrence hit a home run against Patterson Mill”. Torrence, a sophomore who is finishing out her second year on Varsity, is a catcher and plays second base for the team. She feels as though the leadership the girls have taken in practice has enhanced their connection. “Our team chemistry is very strong”.
Leah McGivern, a sophomore who is also nearing the end of her second year on Varsity, plays out in Right Field and at 1st Base. McGivern has talked about the team’s chemistry as well. “The best thing about my team is our chemistry and what we do together. We all get along and when we get together, we have fun and can be serious. We all know our goal is to get farther”. Sofia Gallahue, a 4th year senior on Varsity, achieved a career milestone when she reached 200 strikeouts. After their last regular season game against Harford Tech, the softball team has qualified for Regionals.
Boys Lacrosse
The Boys Varsity Lacrosse team finished their regular season with a record of 8-6. Doug Testerman, head coach, talks about the time he felt the most pride as their coach. “We were invited to play in the Karl Wolfe tournament this spring. We had two games with a six-hour break in between. My guys played very well in the first game, beating Liberty 9-4. Then we battled Howard High School in the Championship game, unfortunately we lost 4-3. It was the hardest fought game we played all year.” After this year, Peter Myers will be playing lacrosse at Catawba College this fall in Salisbury, North Carolina. Myers will be joining three other Bel Air Alumni.
Tennis
The Girls Varsity Tennis team has ended their regular season with a record of 10-5. Their strongest win was in March during the beginning of the season. They were able to leave with the score 10-0. Emmerson Schiller, a senior who has played for four years on the team, tells us about her favorite part about playing on this team. “I would definitely say my teammates or winning a really good match.” Jillian Medley, a senior who has played for two years on the team, shares some advice for people who might want to play tennis in the future. “I would say have patience. There is going to be moments when you’re going to struggle with how much you enjoy it.”
Baseball
The Varsity Baseball team had a final record of 6-11. Throughout the season, the team has expressed their struggle of adapting to having different players miss games. These would be last-minute circumstances where players were injured, sick, or unavailable. However, Bel Air High School Teacher Sam Spooner, head coach, was able to adapt to these changes. “By the end of the season, we were beating some of the best teams in the county so the continued dedication to the process resulted in some positive results.” After these last couple of months, Spooner was able to look back on their progress and tell us what moment left him the proudest. “Being able to give the Lacey Scholarship to Daniel Peña was a proud moment as I was able to continue the legacy which has been going on now for 19 years.” Peña will be attending Lancaster Bible College to continue his academic and baseball career.
Girls Varsity Lacrosse is currently making their way through playoffs. We are looking forward to covering their progress of the season in the near future.
