Engineering team at Bel Air High school approaches soon with captains and fleet commander doing everything they can to ensure a win. Mr. Serokos the manager for the engineering team, oversees 5 teams that are responsible for entering the competition and securing a win for Bel Air. In 2024, Bel Air won the competition and scored bonus points from not just the boat, but the report on the boat done by student, Damian Bradford.
Engineering teams second in charge, fleet commander Karolina Morales manages the captains of the group also ensuring the boats are completed and proper for the competition. Last year, Morales was an engineer for the team with former student Dawson Zacharko being fleet commander. When asked about her experiences as a fleet commander, Karolina said “Keeping the team together and everything in order is difficult but I get to learn how to lead people. It’s rough but it’s fun.”
Fleet commanders aren’t the only ones with immense pressure on them, as freshman Javier Moreno Ramirez is a captain for the engineering team. It is certainly not common for new people with little experience to cover for his position, but Ramirez manages. “It can be hard sometimes considering I am a freshman managing freshman, but I think it sets me up for a higher role. I’m just thankful for my position currently” Ramirez says.
The President of the team Mr. Serokos responsible for supplies and guiding the fleet commander, shares his view on the team- “The team is truly unique because we need people who can build, we need artist, we need writers, we need public speakers. We all have such a diverse set of skills that the team we’ve built is so diverse it allows a space for everyone. Seeing them join and not knowing their place, to seeing them prosper over the years and become leaders makes me love our team.”
Here at Bel Air High, the engineering team is an amazing place to get involved, learn new things and gain experiences and have a chance to grow. It is a hands-on group with many areas one can excel at. The Engineering team meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The hours are from 2:15-5 PM (We are flexible with time). You are wanted! Competition held May 4th at the Museum of Industry in Baltimore Inner Harbor.
