A statement sent out from Jillian Lader, manager of communications for Harford County Public Schools states, “As we work to develop a sustainable and responsible budget for the upcoming fiscal year, adjustments are being made to align resources with available funding. As part of these efforts, all summer school sessions for 2025 have been canceled. This includes elementary and middle summer school sessions, as well as the high school credit recovery summer program.”
This will not include Extended School Year (EYS) which is a federally mandated program for special education students who have Individualized Education Plan’s (IEP). The purpose of the program is to maintain and improve the skills of special education students.
While middle school and elementary school summer school sessions weren’t available the previous school year either due to budget issues, high school credit recovery programs were. High school credit recovery programs allow students to earn credits over the summer for classes they previously didn’t pass.
Many high school students will be impacted by this as many rely on credit recovery programs to pass classes and eventually graduate. This is why seeking help in classes students are struggling in now is strongly encouraged. Students are encouraged to contact teachers or counselors if they are struggling in a class, stay up to date on their current grades through Home Access Center, and ask about tutoring available at Bel Air High School if need be.
