Bel Air High School’s wrestling team takes off with a decent start for the new winter season. Most recently, they secured a win at the Clash of the Titans Duals at New Town High School.
At least one skilled wrestler has been injured and cannot play in a weight class, which led to an automatic loss for Bel Air. With these injuries occurring and facing losses, Bel Air plans to keep their head above water with the lower weight classes, who are carrying them to victory.
Bel Air’s record so far is 16-2 as of December 17. These two losses were gained from the multi-meet on Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7.
The multi-meet hosted Elkton, Wittman, Fallston, and Bel Air. Unfortunately, these meets were both losses due to forfeits from the loss of a specific weight class.
However, skilled wrestlers had something to take away to do better. Varsity Wrestler Khalil Mobley attended the meet on Friday and Saturday walking away with six wins on his belt. Mobley shared his experience while wrestling and his difficulties. “I think all wins and victories aside the hardest part of wrestling in getting in your head. It defeats you, truly.”
Another aspect of wrestling that keeps Bel Air from its full potential is wrestlers staying underweight or overweight to stay in the same class. If one gains or loses too much, they will move weight classes or even move between JV and Varsity. Getting in your head was not the only thing Khalil said defeats you. “Staying underweight is a tough task and is easier said than done. People do not realize how hard it is to be doing what we do” Mobley said.
Skilled wrestler Dominic Gray (Dom) is a Varsity wrestler for Bel Air, who has been wrestling for six years. During the meet Friday and Saturday, he obtained six wins and 2 losses. According to Gray, wrestlers tend to get adrenaline when wrestling from the physical aspect of the sport. “I get nervous and in my head a lot and tend to overthink” Gray says.
While the sport is difficult, wrestlers at BAHS seem to enjoy the sport. When asking Dom and his thoughts on his team, he says “My team is doing pretty good and winning besides forfeits. There are so many new people and we are still going over the basics which sets many skilled wrestlers back and prevents us from learning new things.” Gray believes his team has much potential.
Bel Air High School has many more mees to come, as the season has only just begun. Stay tuned for this wrestling season and show some love to our amazing wrestlers here at BAHS and attend our meets!
