On September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene began her path of destruction through the states of Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee. Being a major category 4 hurricane and third-deadliest US storm, it caused massive flooding and devastation. On Friday, September 27, it reached North Carolina, “bringing historic rainfall and resulting floods and landslides, strong winds, and tornadoes generated by the storm,” detailed a report by North Carolinian Governor Roy Cooper.
Ashville is one of the cities in North Carolina that was affected. Ashville is known for its vibrant arts scene and historic architecture. Within Ashville is the River Arts District. “80% of the River Arts District was destroyed,” explained art teacher and creator of this fundraiser, Kathryn Humphrey. “Artisans lost not only their space but their art and their tools.”
To raise money for the artisans, Humphrey’s 3-D design students went to work making ceramic ornaments and trees to sell. “Ashville was known as the Ceramics Capital of the US. So, it was important to use clay as a means to raise money,” voiced Humphrey. All profits from the sale will go towards Ashville’s relief effects.
This fundraiser is not only an isolated event but is being done across several high schools throughout the county. It not only helps those in need but teaches the students a valuable lesson. “I felt that it was important that despite [my students] young ages they had the ability to make a difference,” affirmed Humphrey.
The ornaments come in all shapes, from stars and teddy bears to candy canes and gingerbread men. There are also dreidel ornaments for those who celebrate Hanukkah. There is a selection of two different trees to choose from. They make the perfect holiday gift.
Ornaments are $10 a piece or 3 for $25. Trees are $25 a piece. Financial contributions are welcome. Buyers can come to room C322 to pick out their product and pay through School Cash Online. They will also be sold during lunch the week of December 16.
