On Tuesday, October 30, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in Game Five of the World Series. After five back and forth games between the two teams, the Dodgers sealed their first World Series win since 1988.
The Dodgers manager, Dave Roberts, had big things to prove this season, considering the team has 12 consecutive postseason trips with little to show for it. With the addition of players like Shohei Ohtani and Tommy Edman and the best record in the league, the Dodgers needed to make a name for themselves after squeaking by the San Diego Padres in the NLDS.
After handling the New York Mets and punching their ticket, Game One of the World Series went to extra innings, with the Dodgers winning 6-3. Game Two, the Dodgers also took, with a score of 4-2. Winning Game Three 4-2 again, the Dodgers just needed one more win to secure the Commissioner’s Trophy, but the Yankees weren’t done yet. In Game Four, the Yankees won 11-4. Still only needing one more win to secure the world title, Game Five had bigger stakes than many expected.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Yankees were up 5-0. Star pitcher Gerrit Cole proceeded to give up five runs in one inning, leading to the Dodgers coming back and tying the game. After two more lead changes, the Dodgers got their 27th out to win their eighth World Series, with a final score of 7-6.
Now that the MLB season is over, all 30 teams will have the option of trading, keeping, and signing players. Spring Training will start on February 20, and the leadoff series to start the 2025 season will be on March 18 in Tokyo, against the Los Angels Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs.
