Last Tuesday, October 15 the BAHS (Bel Air High School) American Sign Language club had a scavenger hunt with prizes for the winners.
The ASL club was created last year when student Layla Pouncy approached Science teacher Mrs. Jordan Long with an idea of creating a club where you could learn and practice ASL. Eagerly, she accepted this proposal. In a recent interview, Long mentions that her husband’s family owns an interpretation business. “It gets a lot of money because it is something that is a life-saving skill. So, I took it on, because I really wanted to learn,” Long explained.
Each meeting consists of a recap of the previous lesson with an additional new lesson. Recently they have been learning the alphabet and common phrases such as “cold” and “hot”. Around the holidays, the students in the club learn words related to that time of year. In addition to this, Long states that they do things like bingo and scavenger hunts to make things more exciting.
The club meets every other Tuesday after school in Long’s room B308. Keep an eye out for flyers in the halls as well as an ear out on the morning announcements for the next meeting.
