On October 1st, 2024, the Bel Air High School (BAHS) golf team had a tournament in Havre De Grace at the Bulle Rock Golf Course. In a pre-tournament interview Coach Mullen said, “I am very excited. The course is very narrow, but I think the team is prepared if they play to the best of their abilities”. The BAHS golf team includes both boys and girls and there is no junior varsity.
Golf is quite different from the other sports at Bel Air. It is based on the score of individuals, but those scores affect the whole team. At a golf tournament there are 6 teams. Each team will go around the course and the scores are added up and announced at the end.
In a post-tournament interview Kyle Drew, a player on the team said, “It was probably the hardest course I’ve ever played,” he explained, “if you went off the fairway it was almost impossible to get the ball out and the sand traps were really big, so it was kind of hard to get them out of there too.”
When asked how the team could have improved, he replied, “If we played a lot less nervous[ly], I think we would’ve been a little bit better.” However, he does think the team did a great job of being consistent throughout the game.
Coach Mullen says “despite the weather and other factors the team rose to the occasion, but I wish we would have achieved more.”
Coach Mullen originally wanted to volunteer for the golf team, to be more active in the school and be a part of a sport he enjoyed.
