At the start of the week the Astronomy class, taught by Mr. Geoffrey McIntyre, went on a fieldtrip to Southhampton Middle School’s planetarium to learn more about the constellations.
Each student was assigned a formation of stars to point out in the room – and was also asked to explain more about the mythology and ways to find it in the sky. For the most part, every student in the class succeeded – and the class arrived back to class with a few minutes to spare before the period change.
Astronomy is a semester class that coexists with Marine Science – and both of these classes have several fieldtrips engrained into them. Not only did the Astronomy class visit the Planetarium, but they’ll visit it two more times – and also go for a daytrip to the National Air and Space Museum in DC. where they’ll have lunch at food trucks and arrive back to Bel Air at around six in the evening. Marine Science also had an entire day dedicated to visiting the Aquarium – where students picked marine animals to find at the aquarium!
Astronomy and Marine Science are packed with lessons you can’t find in other science classrooms. Both classes dedicated to their respective titles give you in depth lectures about each topic relating to them. Plus, if you’re interested in one class – but possibly not the other, you can always find other semester classes to fill that allotted time in!
Both of these classes have just been reintroduced this year after a long hiatus – make sure to consider them with your course selections!
