On Monday, the 23 of October, the marching band of Bel Air High School were joined by all the marching bands in the county for a showcase in Bel Air auditorium and on the turf field to show off their musical talents.
This was a showcase to celebrate all the bands in Harford County, according to Miss Samantha Romero director of bands. In an interview, Romero boasts about the outcome of the showcase. With a smile she remarked that it went well, and it was fun. It was an easy event for them because “it’s just the bands and all the directors and they know what to do. It is meant to be a fun/chill celebration for everything [that] they do.”
Romero mentions that it also had a dual purpose with being able to see how other schools do when performing. It has been a difficult marching band season due to factors like the weather and other hurdles that were challenging for the band. She says, “it’s kind of a ridiculous activity to just march out in a uniform, a crazy hat, and an instrument and then also do all those things at the same time. It’s just really cool to see what everyone is doing. It’s a challenging activity, it’s a difficult activity, and all the schools do something great with it.”
Their favorite songs that they performed were songs that were specifically arranged for them by Daniel Armistead, who made songs like “Running up that Hill,” “Let it Be,” and “Don’t Stop Me Now.”
We asked if there were any areas where she thinks the band could improve on at these future events. She noted that, “We always want to improve. No performance is ever perfect, but overall, I’m really proud of what they have accomplished this season given all the circumstances that they had to deal with.” It is said that they were at the school at 6:45 in the morning, which means they are dedicated to their craft. Anything our band pulls off with be great. In any team they will always strive to improve every time they pick an instrument.
Overall, the marching band had fun. Romero graciously brought donuts to celebrate her team. She says that she is “really proud of the Bel Air band and the energy they were bringing to the stands as they were cheering on for other bands and all in all being supportive.”
