During the week of February 24 through March 2, 2018, Space Camp was held in Huntsville, Alabama, with some Bel Air students attending. Space camp involved many engaging activities for campers with a love for science.

Some of the activities involved during Space Camp were team building, flight simulators where you have to fly like a fighter pilot and do some live dogfights with your team, and mission control where your whole team is broken up and you have to launch, dock your shuttle and space station and land your shuttle without being destroyed. In addition there was also incident command where your team and your sister team is divided up into roles to lead a rescue mission to help victims of a tornado.

Many small projects went into building a rocket, such as constructing a heat shield that would withstand a blowtorch for five minutes

“Space Camp was pretty amazing. I was able to meet so many new people from all over the world, and it was easy to connect with them since they enjoyed some of the same stuff you enjoyed doing since everyone there applied to be there, so everyone wanted to be there and it really showed by people’s attitudes at the camp,” says Space Camp camper and Bel Air Junior, Clark Namauu.

The food served was decent and some nights they would do fun activities like a game night, movie night, karaoke night, and a dance on the last night. Campers had the chance to take many pictures; some campers would be waiting a few hours to get their picture taken. As well, there was a cool museum of rockets and aviation and military vehicles.

“We had awesome crew leaders (adult chaperones) which make the entire experience much more engaging and fun.” says Namauu.

Science Camp was a very good experience for science lovers. With many activities to attend and much knowledge learned, I encourage more students to attend next year.
