League of Legends World Championships Recap

On November 4, 2017, the League of Legends World Championships came to a surprising conclusion, with the two finalists, SK Telecom and Samsung Galaxy White, battling it out to see which team was truly the best in the world. The games that were played during the finals were fairly one-sided, with the results ending up with Samsung Galaxy having three wins, and leaving SK Telecom with nothing. All three games were played on November 4th, 2017, and livestreamed from Beijing, China.

The first game was almost a perfect game on Samsung Galaxy’s part. SK Telecom only had one tower by the end of the game, and they could not get any kills on the opposing team at all. Samsung Galaxy ended up taking complete control over the game, shutting out SK Telecom, and preventing any form of team fight, so that SK Telecom couldn’t have gotten lucky, and possibly turned the game around. As was planned, Samsung Galaxy ended up taking the win in game one.

Game two went fairly similarly to the first, though there were a few changes. First, the game wasn’t close to a perfect game on either team’s parts, both teams did take kills, as well as towers from the opposing teams. Secondly, a team fight did happen. One of the thoughts that most people had coming into the games based off previous games and previous wins from SK Telecom, was that they were the best team as far as team fights go. This thought was blown out of the water in game two, when Samsung Galaxy did manage to win the team fight in the game pretty easily, and ended up using that to bring them closer to taking the game. The win, once again, did go to Samsung Galaxy.

Game three went far differently than expected when compared to the last two games that were played. The game started off with SK Telecom taking a lead. The lead that they had was seemingly insurmountable for Samsung Galaxy, mostly because it was that much of a lead. They had the kill, tower, and gold advantage over Samsung, and there was almost no way they were going to win. Though, if the previous games have shown anything, Samsung Galaxy is great at showing the previous three-time world champions who’s actually deserving of the title. SSG set up three picks against SK Telecom’s damage carries, throwing them back into the game. In the end, Samsung Galaxy ended up taking both the win in game three, and the title of world champions.

I personally didn’t think that the finals were going to be this one-sided. I expected SKT to win worlds, and was fairly shocked when that didn’t actually happen. I’m not saying that I’m upset that they didn’t win, that’s actually quite the opposite. Although not my first choice, I’m fairly glad that Samsung Galaxy ended up shutting out SK Telecom in the finals. Like all winners from worlds, the worlds winners get to choose what champions they want to receive skins for, based off of their team colors. The champions that were chosen are Xayah, Rakan, Jarvan, Gnar, and Taliyah. The new skins are expected to release sometime next year during the summer.
