Leonardo DiCaprio Finally Snags an Oscar

Shane Abrams

It is with great sorrow that I have to convey the tragic news of what has happened this weekend. With a single tear running down my cheek, I regret to inform you all that Leonardo DiCaprio memes had passed away on Sunday night. As they have brought great laughter to us as well as great frustration, places like Reddit or iFunny will seem much emptier without them.

On a more positive note, it’s about time!

After five other nominations for his earlier movies What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator, Blood Diamond, and the Wolf of Wall Street, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his Oscar for Best Actor in the 2015 film the Revenant. The look on his face when they announced his name was priceless, as his date (his mom) along with long-time friend Kate Winslet, were reduced to tears as he took the stage. With the golden trophy in hand, he gave thanks the people that had inspired and motivated him, such as Martin Scorsese, gave praise to his co-stars, and showed appreciation to his friends and family.

DiCaprio then went on to talk about a pressing issue that he takes very seriously: climate change.

The Revenant was about a man’s relationship to the natural world, a world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history,” he stated. “Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow. Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted.”

After the Academy Awards, as he was waiting for his trophy to be engraved, he showed his eagerness as well as a bit of humor. “Do you do this every year? I wouldn’t know.”

After over two decades of pursuing such an award, the environmentalist/actor has finally been able to claim the trophy that has wrongfully evaded him for so long. The only question now is, how long until he’s able to snag another one?
