Be Kind In the New Year

Konnor-Ashley Randlett

It’s that time of the year again. The time where we all start making resolutions and become more self-aware of the person we were in the previous year. We all make resolutions but then by February we sometimes realize we have done nothing to achieve them. There are numerous ways to see your resolutions proper. Here are just a few ideas:

  1. The power of visualization: if you can see your resolution[s] then you can’t forget it. Write your resolution[s] down and put it places where you can’t forget about it. If your resolution is private and you don’t want anyone else to see it, then put it somewhere private. The more you see your resolution[s], the more inclined you are to follow through with them.
  2. Set realistic resolutions. Resolutions are something that you want to achieve; make them realistic.
  3. Have long term and short term resolutions. We all have long term things that we want to accomplish, but those type of things take time. If you make some long term resolutions and some short term resolutions, then when you achieve the short term goals you set, it will make you that much more excited to achieve your long term resolutions. Remember short term takes months to achieve and long term takes years to achieve.
  4. Exercise your resolutions daily. Now obviously this doesn’t mean to take your resolutions for a walk, but it does mean to do something to achieve your resolution each and every day. It is okay if you don’t do it every single day, but remember you resolution will only be achieved if you put in the effort.

Every year we set goals for how to improve upon ourselves and want to make ourselves a better person; we want every year to be our best year yet we are so unaware how easily we can make other peoples years bright as well. There is a countless number of times that we can help someone and be kind throughout the day. If you think about it there is always an opportunity to be kind and make others live a more positive life.

  1. Smile more. You can make others happier by simply smiling. It’s an easy thing to do that can brighten someone’s day.
  2. Spread positivity, not rumors. It’s very easy in conversations to make mean comments and spread stories that you heard someone say to their friend. It’s easy and sometimes it can even be a way to make friends, but don’t do it. If you can’t make conversation with your friends without being mean to someone else, then you should reassess who you are friends with. Spread good things like if you did well on a test or if it’s been a good day for you.
  3. Go out of your way to help people. Even if who you helped wouldn’t go out of the way to help you, who cares? Sometimes we should just be nice for the sake of being nice, not expecting that person to help you as well.
  4. Become aware of your sense of humor. Although this is a personal thing, it also effects everyone that you come in contact with. Think about what you say to people laugh. Is it kind and innocent or do other people serve as a root for your jokes? Meaning: are you only funny because you can say rude and hurtful things about others? Or are you a genuinely humorous person.
  5. Wake up every day happy. Each day is a gift and we shouldn’t allow anything to spoil our present. If you wake up in a bad mood, then you are more likely to cause others to be in a bad mood. So what’s the solution to this? Be happy. At all hours, minutes and seconds of the day. If something bad happens, don’t let it ruin your mood, accept and move on. The happier and more upbeat is the happier that you will make others around you feel.

There are so many ways to make 2015 a happy, positive and successful year, these are just a few. Do your part, follow the resolutions that you set and always help people! If you follow those simple things than 2015 will be a fabulous year!
