Forensic Science Class Stages a BAHS Murder

Over the last few weeks of the 2013-2014 school year, six students in Mrs. Esposito’s Forensic Science class are completing a murder investigation project that incorporates Bel Air High School teachers.

The project is to create a murder, have a backstory, evidence, suspects, and to solve the crime. The six students are Shannon Williams, Morgan Domanico, Allie Forester, Anthony Miranda, Taylor Hruz, and Sarah Ermatinger. The teachers involved are Mrs. Esposito, Mr. Weeks, Mr. Burke, and Mr. Doyle.

For the murder Mr. Burke is killing Taylor Hruz, but framing Mrs. Esposito for it. Through the forensic analysis of blood typing, handwriting, fingerprints, and bite marks the truth of who killed Taylor is uncovered.

When asked for a motive as to why they would kill a student Mr. Doyle responded, “I would kill a student if they stole or did anything to my Star Wars collectable action figures.”

In completing the project, the students created a crime scene complete with fake blood, a fake knife, and crime scene tape. The whole scene was staged, sketched, photograph, and then evidence was collected from it. Along with gathering evidence from the created scene, the students went to all of the teachers involved and took mug shots of them, fingerprinted them, took handwriting samples, and gathered their motives.

“It is the best project that I have ever done for school,” stated Morgan Domanico, one of the students.

These six students are the only students left in the forensics class because they are all juniors and the seniors are done and have taken the final for that class. They are demonstrating the techniques that they have learned throughout the year in the class.
