Creative Prom Proposals

On April 27th the Bel Air High School class of 2013 will be having their senior prom. Through the years the way that people have been asking their dates to prom has changed.

Prom goers have been coming up with original ideas for asking their dates to prom. Some of these ideas include decorating the person’s car, secret riddles, and cute signs. Seniors at Bel Air High School have also been coming up with their own creative ways to ask their dates to prom. Such ways include hanging a giant banner in the school hallway, spelling out prom in different foods, scavenger hunts, writing prom on the garage door, chalking the driveway, giving bouquets, and asking at games during halftime.

“I asked her to go to prom by getting roses. I took the petals off the flowers, and I spelt prom while she wasn’t home, and I went to Build a Bear and got a bear and dressed it in a tux, holding a flower on her bed. Then she came home and she was excited,” said Joe Denver about how he asked Kaitlyn Green to prom.

“It was on Valentine’s Day,” said Kaitlyn Green about the experience.

“I made chocolate covered strawberries, and spelt out prom, and put it on the island in her kitchen after I snuck into her house, and then she came down and was all super excited,” said Taylor Coates about how he asked Rachael Ermatinger to prom.

“And then he popped up out of the counter,” said Rachael Ermatinger the way Coates asked her to prom.

“I put up an 18-foot banner in the main hallway,” said Tyler Persing about how he asked Allison Bazzle to prom.

“I was actually really surprised, and really shocked about it. I walked in and I was embarrassed at first, because there were so many people standing around, but I got over it as the day went on I realized it was kind of sweet,” said Allison Bazzle about how she felt when she saw the banner.

The event of prom was not always so elaborate. Years ago people were asked simply by saying, “Do you want to go to prom with me?” There was hardly ever an extravagant and creative way someone was asked to prom. Keeping it simple was normal for a prom invitation. It was more personal and was expected to be done face to face without a big crowd.

When asked about her senior prom, Mrs. Tackett said, “People would just go up to whoever they wanted to ask and just ask them. It was very simple. ‘Do you want to go to prom?’ and that was it.”

Underclassmen are already starting to think about their prom and ways that they could be asked or would ask someone to prom.  While some people prefer to keep it simple, social networking and the internet has broadcasted many creative ways other people have asked their dates to prom or other events for the world to see. These events have sparked new ideas in the viewer’s minds.

Sophomore Taylor Brethauer talks about her ideas for being asked to prom, “I think flash mobs are pretty cool because you see them on YouTube all the time. And when a guy writes a song for a girl, I’ve seen a video about that. I think those are pretty cute, a really genuine way to ask them.”

Sophomore Bridget Scanga was asked about how she would like to be asked to prom, “I would like to be asked to prom if a guy had it on his shirt, ‘Will you go to prom with me?’ hidden under a jacket.”

The senior prom this year will be at Martins Eastwind from 8pm – 12am. The after-prom party will be at the Bel Air Athletic Club from 11pm – 5am.
