Gus’s Gone for Good

On the last day of the 2012 school year, students were surprised to find a note on the door of Gus’s Deli Mart that said, “We are closed and not reopening”. It was a sudden occurrence and no one saw the close of the popular store coming. The popular deli used to be crowded with students before and after school, as well as government workers at lunch. Now students are searching for a new place to eat after school.

One option for a new hang out is Buontempo Brothers’ pizza place. Even though it’s further away from the school than Gus’s was, it’s still only a short trip down Main Street. They serve hot pizza, subs, and pasta. The prices for food are reasonable and you can order take-out as well. Recently it has become a hotspot for certain sports teams, as the Bel Air Field Hockey team and Bel Air JV Football team often frequent the restaurant.

If the trek to Buontempo’s is too long, then the next closest place is Maria’s Sandwich Shop. It is in the opposite direction of Gus’s former location and just near the end of Heighe Street. They serve sandwiches and subs and the food is either served there or ordered take-out. It offers a quicker option than taking the trip to any alternative restaurant.

The last popular spot that is within walking distance (barely) is Qdoba. The Mexican-themed restaurant offers a plethora of burritos, quesadillas, and tacos. Plenty of people like the change of pace from the regular food offered around Bel Air High School. Their queso burritos come highly recommended from students in Bel Air High School.

While none of these options may hold all of the amenities that Gus’s sold, they are all options where students can satiate their hunger. Gus’s was the one stop shop as Wawa was before it, and until a new convenience store takes up residence, there won’t be one place where students can buy everything they want. Because Bel Air High School is right in the middle of the community, there are plenty of places for students to go and get anything they could want to eat.
