What sport competes throughout the winter months that no one really knows about? That sport is bowling. Many people are surprised that we have bowling teams. It isn’t one of the major winter sports like basketball, wrestling or swimming. Bowling is a very active sport that many people participate in, but it isn’t a very well known.
There are four teams that bowl every Monday from Bel Air High school. They compete against other high schools in Harford County like North Harford, Patterson Mill, Fallston, Aberdeen, Harford Tech, and C. Milton Wright. All together there are about 40 teams. Mrs. Rynes is the moderator and this is her third year moderating. She likes to help organize this sport because her son Nick Rynes, a Junior at Bel Air High School, is a bowler on one of these teams and she likes to watch all the kids bowl. Depending on how well you bowl, and what place your team comes, in you get scholarship money to use towards college. During the discussion Mrs. Rynes revealed that she has been bowling since she was a teenager.
Josh Sporre, a junior at Bel Air, has been bowing since his freshmen year in High school, but bowling for fun since he was a little kid. Josh decided that he wanted to start high school bowling since he didn’t have any other winter sports to play and really wanted to get active. Josh thought it would good opportunity to bowl because he already belonged to a league. Last year his team came in second place and they won scholarship money worth $100. Josh said “compared to last year, we had a new team and didn’t win as many games and we are in twelfth place this school year.” Josh said that there are serious bowlers who really want to do well and then there are the people who really don’t care about how well they do. He said he would qualify as a serious bowler.
Bowling is an active fun sport. Even if you don’t want to bowl for Bel Air High School you can join the youth leagues at Forest Hill Lanes. They bowl three games every Saturday at Forest Hill Lanes for about 2-3 hours. It is a lot of fun because they get to socialize with their friends and only have to pay $9.00 each week. They bowl about nine weeks against other teams and at the end get a gift card to a local store like Wal-Mart or Best Buy. The youth leagues bowl all year long. So give bowling a try. You won’t know if you like it if you don’t try it.
