Ravens Pre-Draft Analysis: The Next Generation of Stars

Ravens Pre-Draft Analysis: The Next Generation of Stars

Brayden Lusby, Sports Writer

In the 2022/23 NFL season, the Baltimore Ravens finished with a 10-7 record and got knocked out of the wildcard by their rival Cincinnati Bengals. The team’s offense struggled with consistency, particularly in the passing game while the defense was consistently solid. The Ravens have five picks in this year’s draft and many scenarios could play out for the Ravens on draft night.

Assuming the Ravens continue to follow their usual draft strategy, which is highly likely, they will prioritize selecting the best player available rather than targeting specific positions. However, based on their current roster needs the team might want to consider prioritizing drafting a wide receiver or cornerback in the early rounds of the draft.

Before the acquisition of Odell Beckham Jr. at wide receiver, the Ravens lacked a true number 1 option, and the current group of pass catchers has been criticized for dropping too many passes and not being able to create separation against their defenders. The Ravens have the 22nd pick in this year’s draft and are hoping players like wide receiver Zay Flowers of Boston College or Jordan Addison of USC are available to pick when their pick is up. These two players specifically have the potential to make a huge impact on the Ravens offense instantly.

At cornerback, the Ravens have some talented players, but they could use more depth and competition at the position. With starting cornerback Marlon Humphrey’s injury history, adding a reliable backup could be crucial to the team’s success. Players like cornerback Joey Porter Jr. of Penn State or Emmanuel Forbes of TCU are options that the Ravens could consider in the first round if they decide to draft a cornerback over a receiver in the first round.

Here is what I think the Ravens will do if they keep their original draft picks or if they decide to trade back and acquire more picks and possibly another player.

Round 1 Pick 22- Joey Porter Jr. CB, Round 3 Pick 86 – Jonathan Mingo WR

Ravens trade their 22nd pick and move back in the draft order but, acquire receiver Deandre Hopkins and/or more draft picks in the process.

Overall, the Ravens should prioritize adding playmakers to their roster in the 2023 NFL draft, particularly on offense. By doing so, they can improve their scoring ability and put themselves in a better position to contend for the playoffs and a super bowl.
