Teachers Win Annual Matt Rutherford Basketball Game Yet Again

On Friday, Feb. 19, the teachers once again defeated the students in the annual Matt Rutherford Basketball game, with a final score of 54 to 45.

The game started off even, but by the end of the first quarter, the teachers had the lead. As time passed, the teachers made their lead stronger, at one point being ahead of the students by 11 points. Both sides fought hard and put on an entertaining show for the students and families who came out.

This is not a surprising outcome; the student have bested the teachers only once in all the Matt Rutherford games combined. With all the trash talking that happened on the announcements prior, the performance the students gave left much to be desired. Why do the teachers always win? Maybe it’s their synergy, experience, or they’re just better at the sport than the students who volunteer to play.

Mr. Clemmer, who put up many points for teachers on Friday night, talked about how he likes the dynamics the student v. faculty games. “It’s a different situation than when we’re in the classroom, and I’m glad people come out to support the games,” he said.

The games, after all, are meant to raise money for the Matt Rutherford Foundation, which was started in memoriam of Matt, a BAHS student who died in a car accident in 2009. The money from raffles and ticket sales will go to the fund, which gives scholarships to Bel Air seniors at the end of May.

Deana Kortesis, the only female student who played in the game, had this to say: “I don’t really play basketball, but I love friendly competition and this game was a good time. I recommend that people sign up to play because it’s for a great cause, and maybe next time, we can beat the teachers!”

Well, next time isn’t too far off. The Matt Rutherford volleyball game will be played sometime in April. Start warming up now Bobcats!
