On Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, the Bel Air High School Varsity Football Team defeated the C. Milton Wright Mustangs by a score of 36-34 at C. Milton Wright High School. The win moves the Bobcats record to 6-3, keeping the Cats’ playoff hopes alive.
Both the Mustang and Bobcat defenses dominated the first; neither allowed the opposing offense to score. The Mustangs struck first with 9:51 left in the second quarter, scoring a touchdown to make the score 6-0. The Mustangs made the score 8-0 when they tackled the Bobcat ball carrier in the end zone for a safety. C. Milton Wright scored the final touchdown of the half to make the score 15-0 at halftime.
The Bobcats started their comeback in the second half when Miguel Valdes broke a long run for a touchdown. Matt Wallace successfully ran in a two point conversion to cut the Mustang lead down to eight. A Mustang touchdown and a successful point after made the score 22-8 with 8:23 left in the third quarter. The Bobcats fought back; Devin Bowers ran for a touchdown to make the score 22-14. Another touchdown run by Miguel Valdes and a successful two point conversion, also scored by Valdes, tied the game at 22 with 7:11 left in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs regained the lead with 6:35 remaining in the fourth quarter; a missed extra point made the score 28-22. Another touchdown run by Devin Bowers tied the game at 28. Cameron Watts scored the final touchdown for the Bobcats but a successful two point conversion by Miguel Valdes made the score 36-28. A late touchdown by C. Milton Wright cut the lead to two points, but time expired on before they could score again.
Senior captain Clay Brumbaugh was once again proud of his team’s effort, “There was no quit in us, at all. At no point did we think we were out of the game. The people that needed to lead us stepped up and I couldn’t be more proud of my brothers. Friday is the deciding factor for us, and we will hold nothing back.”
The Bobcats return home this week to play the undefeated Fallston Cougars on Senior Night. Come out to support the Cats in their biggest game of the season. Kick-off is at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8. Tickets cost $5.
