The Bel Air girls’ soccer team defeated North Harford 2-1 on the Bobcats’ senior night, on October 15th. The game was close late but Bel Air was able to pull out the win to improve their record to 5-6-1.Prior to the game beginning the team paid tribute to Sarah Dempsey, Brooke Lorber, Erin Swam, Teresa Berg and Hanna Starnes, the 5 seniors on the 2012 squad.
The first goal of the night was scored by junior Morgan Rusinko on an assist from junior Jordan Layfield in the 38th minute to give the Cats a 1-0 lead. The Bobcats maintained that lead as they went into the halftime.
The Bobcats continued the quick attack into the second half as one of the five seniors on the team, Teresa Berg, assisted sophomore Shannon Williams in the 47th minute to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. The Hawks were able to quickly strike back when Julia Shrof got the ball past the goalkeeper junior Karlie Scherba on an unassisted goal to cut the Cats lead to 2-1. A late rally was put on by the North Harford Hawks in the final ten minutes, possessing the ball in their offensive zone for the most part. Scoring chances were high but they were unable to cash in and the Bobcats left the stadium victorious.
The Bobcats held the lead due to the outstanding effort of junior goalkeeper Karlie Scherba, who had eight saves on the night. The North Harford goalie registered nine saves herself.
The win improves the Cats record to 5-6-1 on the year. The ladies have not lost in 4 consecutive games, three of those games coming as wins, the other a tie. The four game streak marks the longest such streak on the season for the Cats. This was the final home game on the season for Bel Air. The Cats finished the season with a record of 2-2-1 at home. With a win against Aberdeen the Cats can achieve a .500 season, something that looked unattainable with five games to go.
The final game of the season is on Wednesday October 17th at 3:30 at Aberdeen High School.
