The 2012 U.S Golf Open took place June 14 through 17. The 112th playing of the U.S Open took place at The Olympic Club located in San Francisco, California. This was the fourth time that the U.S Open has been played at this course.
The Olympic Club proved to be a daunting challenge for even the best players in golf. Phil Mickelson one of golf’s best players finished 16 over par for the tournament. The number 1 and 2 players in the world Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald didn’t even make the cut. In the end, The Olympic Club won, and several players merely survived.
There were many stories coming into this week that golf fans wanted to see play out. They included: Could Tiger Woods win another major? Could Rory McIlory defend his U.S Open title? Would Casey Martin have as much controversy surrounding him as before? Would the winner of the open be another 1st time major winner, just has been the case in 14 out of the past 15 majors..
Two of these stories were answered. Tiger Woods did not return to superstardom by winning instead he finished tied for 21st. Tiger started the tournament out great by shooting a 1 under par round the first day and an even par round the second day. When Tiger started playing on the weekend everything went downhill he shot a plus 5 round on Saturday and then a plus 3 in the final round at the U.S Open.
The Number two player in the world Rory McIlrory didn’t even make the cut at the U.S Open. He never really even got the chance to defend his title as he was no match for the course. He shot a 7 over round his first round and then a 3 over round his second round. He just couldn’t get anything going all week.
One of the highlights of the tournament besides a champion being crowned was Nick Watney’s double eagle on the Par 5 17th hole he was 190 yards out and hit a 5 iron into the green. The ball hit and ran straight to the whole and went in. Also one of the other highlights of the open came during the practice round before the Open started. Alvaro Qurios got a hole in one on the par 4 7thhole at Olympic Club.
The other story that was answered was that there would be a first time major champion, yet again. The winner of the 112th U.S Open at Olympic Club was won by the 26 year old from Charlotte, North Carolina, Webb Simpson. This is Simpson’s first major win. Also, it’s only his second time playing in the U.S Open. One of the keys to Simpson’s wins was the fact that he only had one double bogey on higher throughout all four of his rounds. He shot a two over then three over then two straight two under par rounds to win the Open by one stroke over Graeme MCDowell who was chasing him down the stretch in the final round.
