It has been well established that since the Baltimore Ravens came to Baltimore in 1996 that they are a defense minded team and the offense is secondary to them. This was made blatantly obvious when the Ravens won the Super Bowl in 2000 on the back of their defense with Ray Lewis leading the way. This week the Baltimore Ravens are preparing for the toughest game of the year, where they will be heading into Foxboro, Massachusetts to take on the New England Patriots for the American Football Conference Championship. Now if there is already not enough pressure on the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens Joe Flacco already, the comments made this week by Raven’s All-pro free safety Ed Reed on Joe Flacco was just adding fuel to the fire. The comments made by Ed Read were, “I think Joe was kind of rattled a little bit by that defense,” Reed said. “They had a lot of guys in the box on him. And, I mean, they were getting to him. I think a couple times he needed to get rid of the ball.”I don’t know how much of the play-calling, he could have made audibles or anything like that, checks or whatnot, man, but it just didn’t look like he had a hold on the offense, you know, of times past. You know, it was just kind of like they were telling him to do, throw the ball or get it here, you know, get it to certain guys. And he can’t play like that. “
Reed also called on the big men in front of Flacco to step up their game.”(The) offensive line’s got to block better,” Reed said. “You know, they got to communicate better, got to pick up blocks, Joe’s got to get the ball out of his hand.” Now Ed Reed has earned the right to be allowed to criticize one of his teammates, but is it really smart to do this before the biggest game of the season? It makes no sense people; are saying that this was Ed Reed trying to fire up Joe Flacco. Instead this has caused a huge media surge focusing on Joe Flacco, with people saying he’s not good enough to win a Super Bowl, he’s too inconsistent and he too soft.
Well folks, Joe Flacco is far from soft and does need his own teammates calling him out this season, especially after the teammate played at a lower level then he usually does. Why can’t Ed Reed have just supported Joe Flacco like the Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs did? Ed Reed just did this at the worst time and in the worst way: by doing it over the radio. If you really have a problem with how your quarterback has been playing, then be a man and tell him it to his face instead of going on to a radio show and doing it.
The knock that people have had all season on Joe Flacco is that he is too inconsistent. True, being consistent matters, but would Ravens fans rather Joe Flacco be consistent and lose or not be consistent and win? Most Ravens fan are going to say inconsistent and winning. As much as people say Joe Flacco is inconsistent he has won when he had had to and made the throws when he had to.
When the Ravens were facing the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football the great Ravens defense let up a touchdown and none other than Joe Flacco led the Ravens down the field with 2 minutes left to score a game winning touchdown; and with this win the Ravens swept the Steelers and won the division. Now let me tell you who couldn’t beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh: the great Patriots and good old Mr. Tom Brady. They lost 25 to 17 the score doesn’t reflect how the game actually was. The Patriot got mangled in this game by Pittsburgh. Tom Brady didn’t put up his normal numbers in the game against Pittsburgh, only throwing for 198 yards and 2 touchdowns. Now when Joe Flacco played against Pittsburgh he threw for 300 yards and only one touchdown, but Flacco won the game. Also, Flacco has done something that no other National Football League quarterback has ever done; he has gone to the playoffs in his first 4 years and won at least one game each of those years. Not even Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Dan Marino, or Jon Elway did this. Plus, Joe Flacco is one game away from tying Tom Brady for the most wins in the playoffs in his first four years. Tom Brady has 6 wins and Joe Flacco has 5 win. Also, Joe Flacco is tied for the most wins on the road in the playoffs at 4 wins one shy of breaking the record. Joe Flacco can break the record this Sunday by winning in Foxboro.
Also, people get on Joe Flacco for not running the offense well enough. Well people need to face the fact the Ravens have a “not so good” offensive coordinator in Cam Cameron. The fact of the matter is that Cam Cameron doesn’t know how to utilize the offense weapons he has. So Joe Flacco is not the one calling the plays, its CAM CAMERON! People get mad when Joe Flacco throws the ball, because they whine and complain that we need to give the ball to the Ravens running back Ray Rice because he good. There is no doubt that Ray Rice is a good running back, but there comes a point in time where people are going to have stop getting mad when the Ravens throw the Ball. Sooner or later Ray Rice isn’t going to have a good game and people are going to say why couldn’t Joe Flacco throw the ball better. The reason why is people just want the Ravens to just turn around and hand the ball to Ray Rice.
So people next time that you think Joe Flacco is a bad quarterback just look at the stats. Joe Flacco is a winner and a good quarterback. Oh, and he holds the record for the most wins in his first four season as a starting quarterback with 44; better than Mr. Tom Brady.
