The World Series Begins

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Texas Rangers in game 1 of the 107th World Series with a score of 3-2. Chris Carpenter was on the mound for the Cardinals for six innings only allowing 2 runs and recording 4 strike-outs. C.J Wilson pitched for the Rangers, going through 5 2/3 innings while also recording 4 strike-outs. The first run of the game came when Lance Berkmen put St. Louis ahead in the 4th with a 2 run home run. The lead lasted until the 5th when Mike Napoli hit a two-run homer of his own to lock the score at 2-2. Pinch hitter Allen Craig hit in the final and go-ahead run for the Cardinals in the 6th inning by slicing the ball down the right field line just in front of Nelson Cruz of the Rangers who attempted a sliding catch on the wet and slippery field.

Coming back from 10 games down in the last month of the MLB season is said to be impossible. On August 25th, 2011 the Cardinals sat 10.5 games back from the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wildcard race with one month left to play in the regular season. The Cardinals proved it wasn’t impossible by winning 23 of their last 32 regular season games which gave them a one game lead and the wildcard spot over the Atlanta Braves when the season came to a conclusion.

After making a late season run to get to the playoffs, the Cardinals are showing that they belong in the post season. The Cardinals first advanced to the NLCS by defeating the Nation League regular season champion, the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLWS. This defeat took all five games of the series to decide a victor until Chris Carpenter of the Cardinals pitched a complete game shutout to lead his team to a 1-0 win in game 5. The Cardinals then proceeded to advance to the 107th World Series to play the Texas Rangers of the American League by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLCS game 6 on October 16th , 2011.

Now with a 1-0 lead in the World Series, Tony La Russa will send Jaime Garcia to the mound in game two to face off against Colby Lewis of the Rangers.

12 of the last 14 teams to win game 1 of the World Series eventually went on to win the series, however Texas has not lost two consecutive game since August. Game two is shaping up to be just as exciting as game one, so tune in to watch it on FOX.
