In April of 2026 the Hungarian election took place, and many expected it to go the same as it had for the last 16 years. President Trump endorsed his friend, and even had VP Vance go to support his campaign in Hungary. But even with all this support the Hungarian people had enough of Orbán’s authoritarian rule and chose to vote in Péter Magyar.
According to PBS, Magyar ran under promises of public transport, health care, and removing the corruption in office during Orbán’s reign. This move will now reshape the political landscape of not only the world but more specifically Europe. Orbán was an ally of both President Trump and Vladimir Putin, and now their ties with the leaders and as a far-right figure head under Orbán fall. New prime minister Magyar pledged his intent to revitalize the countries’ status and relationship between other NATO countries, and other members of the European union, relations which fell through under Orbán.
Cheers have erupted through the streets of Hungary, as people celebrated the election of Magyar. Hungarians chanted, “Ruszkik haza!” which means Russians go home. This is a significant chant in their country’s history, as it was heard through their streets in 1956 during their anti-Soviet revolution. The movement has revitalized now, as Orbán had moved them closer to Moscow with his far-right ties to Putin, which now will be fought against under Magyar.
