Controversial Willow Project Approved

Molly Olschewske, Staff Writer

As many have heard, President Joe Biden has given permission for the Willow Project to begin. He made this decision last week on March 13th, 2023.

The Willow Project is an oil development plan on the Alaskan Northern Slope by ConocoPhillips. This area is planned to hold up to 600 million barrels of oil. This project not only affects you, but it affects the world. It will release 9.2 million metric tons of planet-warming carbon pollution a year.

This is a huge climate threat, and disappointing to many who voted for Joe Biden when his campaign promised to focus on climate issues. This project will destroy habitats for native species and alter the migration patterns of many animals. People who are native to Alaska will be paid extraordinarily little and may suffer a lot from being so close to this project due to toxins.

If you are against the Willow Project and are not sure what you can do against it, a petition has been created on change.org. https://www.change.org/p/joseph-r-biden-biden-administration-and-conocophillips-say-no-to-the-willow-project
