Order In the Court: Getting Ready for Homecoming

Jake Levie

Homecoming Week: a whole week dedicated to celebrating a high school’s school spirit, with all of it coming to a close with the Homecoming Dance. While you probably already know that some people have jobs dedicated to promoting school spirit, did you know there is a job dedicated to showing school spirit?

If you are a member of the Homecoming Court, your job is to represent your school in the best way possible during Welcome Week and Homecoming Week. So, how do you do that? Along with showing your school spirit, you must attend the Pep Rally dressed in your toga and crown, be escorted out to the Homecoming Game by your family, and dance to one song with your counterpart at the Homecoming Dance.

“You have my interest. Where and how do I apply for a Homecoming Court position?” Well, you don’t. Instead of you applying for a position in Homecoming Court, your fellow students nominate you and explain why you deserve the position via paper application. You must get at least two nominations in order to get on the ballot.

Mrs. McDonough, health teacher at Bel Air High school and Homecoming coordinator, says “Court members are chosen based on their leadership qualities, spirit, integrity, volunteering, academic success and achievement through their contributions and involvement at Bel Air High School.”

“There’s a ballot as well? Do students vote in that, too?” Actually, teachers and staff are the ones who vote in the ballot. After being sent information on each nominee based on what the students wrote, teachers and staff take from their own experiences with each nominee and vote.

“Bios are typed up and electronically sent to all teachers and staff at BAHS. They have about five days to vote based off of what they see from the nominees in the classroom and outside.  Votes are sent to me and I tally them, making the HC Court announcement in the morning,” said Mrs. McDonough.

Homecoming Week starts on Monday, Sept. 29, so good luck to all of the Homecoming Court nominees. Go Bobcats!
