BAHS Art Students Contribute to St. Baldrick’s

On Mar. 8, 2014, the St. Baldrick’s fundraising event was held at Loony’s Pub in Bel Air, featuring a mural and banner created by BAHS art students.

The St. Baldrick’s fundraising event raises money to help research in finding a cure to fight children’s cancer. With a slogan of “Grow it! Shave it! Fight it!” the firefighters at the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company and many other supporters have grown out their hair to shave for this cause. This event takes places every year, and last year alone raised $42,000.

The Advanced Drawing students of Mrs. Crocker’s art class in Bel Air High School were asked by Dylan Baumgarder, a Bel Air Fire Company volunteer, if they would create a mural for the St. Baldricks fundraising event in mid-April. The students started working right away and finished the mural 3 days before the given deadline, in addition to creating an exceptional banner for the cause.

“Once the proposition was presented to my students, they jumped at the chance to become part of this event”, says Mrs. Crocker. “The students finished not one 5’ x 7 ½’ mural, but a 5’ x 3’ banner as well.”

The 5’ x 3’ banner was hung over the stage, while the 5’ x 7 ½ ’ was made a backdrop for a photo booth for those donating to take pictures in front of, while wearing fun St. Patrick’s Day gear.

Photos of the students artwork was featured in the Baltimore Sun, and the Aegis Newspaper. The next project the Advanced Drawing students will be taking on will be drawing or painting a pirate ship and buccaneers for a Relay for Life team. They are also working on another mural for this event that will act as a backdrop for a photo booth.
