Big Things Come in Small Boxes

Throughout the month of November, Bel Air High School has been participating in Thanksgiving in a Box. All final contributions for the drive will be collected on Friday, November 22, 2013.

Thanksgiving in Box has been going on throughout the homerooms of Bel Air High School. Each homeroom was told to bring in, if possible, their assigned preserved food item. All of the items will be boxed up to make a Thanksgiving dinner for needy families around the Bel Air area. When the Principal Mr. Komondor first came to Bel Air, he brought with him a goal to involve students with the community; this food drive was a great way to start.

Bel Air High School is working with St. Margaret’s church, the H.O.P.E. club, and various students, teachers, and staff members to make this food drive a success. This year, Mrs. Snow and Mrs. Zader have stepped up to help out Mrs. Harris and Mr. Komondor with running the charity. All of the final items will be collected this Friday, Nov. 22. Then, H.O.P.E. Club and various other volunteers will total our contributions and box up donated items. The Sunday before Thanksgiving, a group of volunteers will repack any boxes that need additional food and unload a truck of turkeys that are bought or donated. Then, fresh fruit will be added to the boxes.

Principal Mr. Komondor said, “I hope this is a tradition that continues for many years to come here at Bel Air High School, and I hope we pass the goal of 2,014 cans or boxes. Bobcat Nation should be proud of the positive impact they have on the community.”

There are many families in the Harford County area who are in need. Everyone deserves a special meal for Thanksgiving. The goal for this school year is to collect at least 2,014 items to help make a positive impact in the community.

Each small donation adds up. Last year, Bel Air made a total of 60 complete Thanksgiving Boxes for families in need. The goal this year is to collect and assemble 70 Thanksgiving boxes.

BAHS freshman Megan Stocum exclaimed, “I’ve never really thought about a school giving back to the community. I attend St. Margaret’s church every Sunday, and when I found out that my own high school was getting involved with this food drive, it was great to hear.”

Make sure to make a donation to your homeroom this week. No one can help everyone, but everyone can help someone. Be thankful for all that you have and give back.
