Student Body Handles Gas Leak With Ease

On Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, Bel Air High School experienced a gas leak, leading to a complete school evacuation.

A little before 10:00 a.m., the fire alarm sounded. Students and teachers evacuated the school to their respectively assigned positions, mostly the front and back parking lots. Shortly afterward, everyone was moved to the bleachers of Bobcat Stadium.

At that point, students geared up for the long haul. Seniors recalled the Bomb Threat of the 2010-2011 school year. During that evacuation, students were kept outside for a majority of the school day.

After an hour of sitting in the bleachers, everyone was called back into the school. During that hour, the Bel Air Fire Department came, found the leak and fixed it, allowing a semi-normal school day to resume.

The leak was sprung in one of the Home Economics rooms. People in the room reported a scent of gas. The report was confirmed and the school was evacuated.

Mr. Gregory Komondor, school principal, came on the announcement once everyone was back in the building. He wanted, “to thank all students, teachers, and faculty for their cooperation.” The evacuation, transportation to the bleachers and return to class went off relatively smoothly, without any major hitches.

With everyone back in the school and safe, the school day will go on with a small modification to the schedule. A shortened 4th period and a bit of time in the damp, overcast weather is the only price that Bel Air had to pay.
