Kindness Campaign Spreads Around the School

After the assembly on Tuesday, October 8, Mrs. Jones 3B Speech and Communication class collaborated together to create the Kindness Campaign, a movement in which those involved will promote compassion by doing random acts of kindness.
Mrs. Jones’ 3B class is only composed of eight students. After Ray Rice’s speech, there was a debate among the student body: did his message had anything to do with anti-bullying? Did it have merit? Was it a waste of time? The class came to conclusion the speech did have merit and wasn’t about anti-bullying, but instead it focused on the ways people can prevent it by being kind to others, which is an equally important message.

This debate sparked the creation of the Kindness Campaign, and their first course of action was wearing yellow ribbons, the color of friendship, around the school to spread the word of the new organization. Several posters have also been hung around the school advertising their acronym B.F.F.L., which they say stands for Bobcat Family for Life.

“The difference between our club and C.O.R.E Club is that we are just focusing on having at least a monthly act of kindness. We don’t want this die out a week after we do something like Rachel’s Challenge does,” says Holly Edwards, a senior member of the Mrs. Jones class.

The class also noted that this isn’t a typical club. They don’t have after school meetings, and there are no officers. They have events about once a month, and they plan to inform those who want to get involved via social media. This week, Oct. 28 to Oct. 30, the class will be wearing chains made of paper. With them, they have acts of kindness written on strips of paper for people to carry out. Once completed, the person will add the strip to the wearer’s chain.

Mrs. Jones stated that “They came up with this idea naturally and from their motivation to want to make a difference in the school. I am really proud of them for it.”
