Chalk the Walk Lights Up Pavement

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, Bel Air High School students participated in the annual Chalk the Walk to celebrate homecoming.

Chalk the Walk is a part of the homecoming activities that took place in the week. Other Homecoming Week events include the Spirit Days, the Scavenger Hunt, and Trivia Night. These have all been scored the class with the highest point total from these events will receive $500 dollars for their class. Second place receives $300, Third place receives $200, and $100 will go to the class in fourth place. This money is raised from homecoming ticket sales.

Chalk the Walk has been a Bel Air High School tradition for over 11 years. It was a tradition that has been carried on from the old building, where students would decorate the sidewalk leading to the front of the school. Each year the drawings correspond to the theme of the homecoming. This year, the each class’ illustrations feature all things movie related, to fit the theme “A Night at the Oscars.” Even some of the boys’ soccer team created their own drawing.

Mrs. McDonough, teacher supervisor of Chalk the Walk,  stated “This is a great way to show out spirit for the game and for the week we have been celebrating. Everyone has fun doing this activity.”

This was the first year that Bel Air High School has done a Scavenger Hunt and a Trivia Night instead of decorating a showcase or making a sandwich board. According to Mrs. McDonough this is because, “we thought it would be great to challenge the mind and not just have everything be about arts and crafts. We wanted to things to be new and different this year and the activities we picked were so much fun and everyone had a blast doing them.” Ms. Matthews and Mr. Smith ran the scavenger hunt, and Mr. Skelton and Ms. Andrews ran trivia.

Chalk the Walk is a great Bel Air tradition that has carried on for over a decade. Due to chalk’s lack of permanence, it will unfortunately not adorn the pavement again until next fall.
