NHS Writing Center to Help Common Core Transition

Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m. in the Media center, the National Honor Society will be offering a Writing Lab for all students.

After school on every Wednesday for one hour in the Media Center, the National Honor Society members will be volunteering to help any students interested in strengthening their writing skills. At least one English teach will be present among the volunteers to provide insight and help on any type of pre-writing, drafting, poetry, editing, essays or any type of writing. Students can get help with essays or homework they are struggling with or just seek out help on any skills they need to sharpen.

The idea was presented by NHS President Ben Barsam, hoping to strengthen writing skills due to The Common Core Curriculum. As the school adopts this curriculum a major emphasis will be made on writing in not just English classes, but will be an intricate part of all classes.

“The NHS kids are volunteering to do all of the tutoring and helping with the process, they teachers are just going to be there to help facilitate things. It’s open to anyone, you don’t need a pass or an invitation; it’s just for you to be able to stay after and get the help you need.” Mrs. Stants, NHS teacher advisor, said.

The service is completely free because of its volunteer basis, so the pay to Participate policy does not apply.
