9/11 Flag Tribute

After school on Friday September 6, 2013, the Bel Air High School Student Government created a sea of American flags on the front grass as a tribute for the 12th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

The students of the SGA have collected 3,266 flags to take over the front lawns for the victims. Each flag represent the life of a victim of the attacks on 9/11. On Tuesday, September 5th, the SGA homeroom counted out the flags and prepared them to be displayed. The SGA was about 100 flags short and had to hurriedly purchase more in time for set up on Friday.  Thankfully, the flags were sorted out in time for set up and a successful memorial was put together for the 3rd year in a row.

The BAHS senate agreed it was important to have the exact amount of flags in order to represent and show respect as a school for each individual victim that was lost in the attacks.

“I think it’s important for the school to pay our respects to the fallen because the attacks were an ending to so many innocent people’s lives that nobody ever deserved,” Said sophomore senator Bekka Mingioni.

The flags will be set up in front of the building from September 6 until September 11.

“The memorial is all about never ever forgetting the victims, which I think we do so easily,” said SGA advisor, Mr. Roth.

As students enter the school on Wednesday, they are encouraged to take the time to remember 9/11 and think remember the lives lost on that tragic day.
